General Tips for Creating Postings

What is an Internship?

An internship should provide students with the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real work situations - the work assigned is directly related to the students' course of study. Internships should provide practical "hands-on" training, enabling students to build on their skills and employers to train students in their operations and to identify prospective hires.

Intern Job Description?

A detailed job description is recommended for a successful Internship. No more than 20% of any internship should be clerical duties. Maximize the student talent, and assign meaningful projects and assignments. Like any Job Description, consider the following:

  • Hours per week

  • Skill requirements

  • Position responsibilities

  • PC proficiency

  • Salary

  • Accessibility to Public Transportation/Parking

Most internships are a semester long: 14-16 weeks for an academic semester or Summer.

Is an Intern considered an employee?

Paid interns are considered PT, temporary employees, and payroll should be treated accordingly.

Unpaid interns, who work for the learning experience and academic credit only, may appreciate parking passes, bus fare or company cafeteria privileges.

The employer is responsible for paying payroll taxes on any intern's salary as well as providing the intern with the same legal protections as other employees.

Must I pay an Intern?

No. Most students participate in Internship to acquire work experience related to their field of study AND receive academic credit towards graduation. Though the likelihood of securing candidates may lessen by posting an unpaid position, many students recognize the benefits of the experience far outweigh compensation. The value of a strong reference or Letter of Recommendation is priceless!

When is the Intern considered an unpaid volunteer?

The DOL regulations define "volunteer" as someone providing services to a public agency for civic, humanitarian or charitable reasons without the expectation of being paid for services rendered. An intern at a for-profit company does not fit this definition.

Is an Intern entitled to workers' compensation?

Some state statues exclude interns from coverage, while others do not necessarily specify whether an intern is entitled to coverage or not. For those states, typically an intern's contribution to a company is sufficient to establish employee status with the participating company for workers' compensation purposes, regardless of whether the intern is unpaid, paid or receives a stipend.
