Description:
Sea School is a program designed to help children ages 3-5 become excited about learning and to help them get acquainted with a classroom setting before they make the transition to kindergarten. The program is broken up into sessions, with each session lasting 8 weeks. During each session the children attend class 2 days a week for 2 hours. The program is a unique combination of hands on interactive projects but also incorporates various elements of structured, traditional learning methods. The curriculum has been developed to challenge children and to go beyond some of the typical topics young children are taught, rather then teaching the Sea Schoolers to simply identify colors, the topic is taught in conjunction with a visit to the Aquarium's water lab. After watching the lab technician test various water samples, and changing there color in the process, the children will come back to the room where they experiment with mixing colors together to create new colors. Sea School offers a chance for the group to go behind the scenes of the Aquarium as well as having special animal visits to the classroom - a unique opportunity to engage children and help them get excited about learning! A Sea School intern would be able to witness and be a part of the many dimensions that go into this special preschool program. The experience would be a wonderful opportunity to work with young children and gain classroom experience which would be very beneficial to any education major. Internships are available in any of our future Sea School sessions listed below; there are four different classes that meet each session: March 10- May 1 Monday and Wednesdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 Tuesday and Thursdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 May 5-June 26 Monday and Wednesdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 Tuesday and Thursdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 July 7-August 28 * The summer session is particularly busy; the Aquarium has amazing outdoor exhibits that we would like to take advantage of. There is a great need for extra staff during this session! Monday and Wednesdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 Tuesday and Thursdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 September 8- October 30 Monday and Wednesdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 Tuesday and Thursdays: 9:15-11:15 or 1:00-3:00 To apply for a Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration Education Department Internship please complete the Internship application in the 'get involved' section of the www.mysticaquarium.org website or contact Trina Barrett at tbarrett@mysticaquarium.org or 860-572-5955 ext 205 for additional information.
