Safe Passage Development
Safe Passage raises approximately half of its annual budget of $860,000 from a wide variety of private fundraising efforts, including foundation grants, United Way, special events, and solicitations of contributions from individuals and businesses.
The internship
This position supports the work of Safe Passage’s Director of Development. This internship is an administrative position, and does not include direct services to Safe Passage’s clients. We seek applicants who are interested in a career in nonprofit fundraising and administration. This position will provide our intern with valuable experience in a thriving nonprofit organization.
The duration of the internship is flexible; however, we seek an intern who is available, at minimum, throughout the entire fall and spring semesters of the 2012-2013 academic year. Additional hours may be available in January and during summer 2012 and/or 2013.
The intern will be expected to work 10-20 hours per week, depending on availability, during Safe Passage’s office hours: Monday-Friday, 9-5, with occasional evening or weekend meetings and events. Safe Passage’s office is located in downtown Northampton, Massachusetts.
Responsibilities
Grants:
Research foundations and corporate grant programs
Help with editing of proposals and reports
Help in writing minor proposals and reports
Events:
Perform data entry and maintain records
Serve on Hot Chocolate Run event committee and be responsible for event duties as assigned
Assist with sponsor relations
Assist with requests from sponsors, participants, media, and donors
Donor Relations
Manage fundraising mailings, including coordination of volunteers
Perform donor research
Perform data entry and database maintenance (Safe Passage uses Giftworks—we will train the intern on this software)
Manage donor thank you letters and receipts
Manage donations of items for Safe Passage clients (furniture, clothing, etc.)
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship. Interns are welcome to seek out work study opportunities with their colleges, and we are open to work study programs requiring Safe Passage to make a financial contribution.

Excellent computer skills (MS Office) and ability to learn new programs quickly
Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
Strong organizational abilities
Strong writing and verbal communication skills
Excellent telephone skills
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities
Ability to represent Safe Passage in a professional manner
Availability to work, at minimum, throughout the full Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 academic semesters
Preferred qualifications
Reliable transportation
Experience and knowledge about domestic violence and its impacts
Availability for training during summer 2012
Availability to work during summer 2012 and/or January 2013
