About Us:
Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires (VIM Berkshires) is a free, not-for-profit healthcare clinic that serves income-qualified, medically uninsured residents of the Berkshire area who are between 19 and 64 years old. VIM volunteers provide dental, medical and mental health care. This includes not only patient appointments with medical and dental staff, but also transportation and interpretation, patient advocacy and free medications.
VIM Berkshires is volunteer staffed, with about 90 active clinical and lay volunteers. It has a small paid support staff. Since opening in December 2004, the clinic has seen approximately 350 patients and provided over 1500 patient visits. We work closely with other area healthcare facilities to provide specialist referrals and ongoing care. Approximately 45% of the clinic's patients speak Spanish or another foreign language; VIM uses trained medical interpreters for medical appointments.
The clinic facility feels much like a private office, with a reception area, 3 medical examination rooms; a dental suite with 2 operatories and a laboratory; mental health counseling rooms, a classroom/meeting room, and several offices. An optometry facility is under construction and should be open in May 2007. All medical records are kept on a computerized medical record program.
VIM provides a respectful and caring atmosphere for patients and volunteers alike; appointments are scheduled to offer adequate time so that providers and patients are not rushed. Everyone - patients, lay volunteers; medical volunteers - are treated with dignity and respect, towards a goal of building community based on teamwork and collaboration.
