About Us:
Career Beginnings is a program of the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education. Our mission is to increase the percentage of Hartford-area students who go directly on to college after high school. We offer after-school workshops, one-on-one advising and a mentoring program. We are looking for unpaid interns who are interested in working with high school aged urban youth to help them attain their goals. The intern will participate in the planning and execution of workshops and will visit high schools on a daily basis and meet with students directly to advise the students about how best to achieve their goals. The intern will receive hands-on training from our staff and will be a part of all staff and planning meetings. The intern must have his or her own transportation. This is an excellent opportunity for any person interested in working with the high school population. The intern will visit several different schools and get a taste of the variety of school cultures. The intern will better understand the stresses and barriers to success that urban school systems and the students face, and the intern will be able to work with a program with a proven track record of overcoming those obstacles. We would ideally like a full-year commitment but we understand at the same time that many internships can run only for one semester.
