Recognizing the critical need for a more human based approach to long term care, Apple Health Care, Inc. has adopted the philosophy of "Better Life." This philosophy is unique to Apple's 21 facilities. Better Life operates on the premise that a resident or "elder" in one of our homes is a unique individual, and should be recognized as such. The philosophy also works to create a home-like atmosphere in each home, so that each resident can feel as comfortable as possible. It is our mission to provide not only excellent medical services, but also compassionate quality of care. In doing so, we have realized that there is much involved in elder care that does not necessarily grow out of a medical base, but more of a social one. It is the quality of the relationships that a resident is involved in that will enrich their time in our facilities. It is the prevalence of human kindness and interaction that will make them feel alive and contributing to the community in which they reside. We make it a priority to foster the development of those relationships. By approaching long term care from the viewpoint that the resident should be at the center of the decision making process, we felt it necessary to change our practices from the moment a resident steps in the door. By taking the time to find out what a resident wants and desires, and by making sure that the transition from their home to ours is smooth, we can provide a home-like atmosphere that is more similar to the way they have lived all their lives. Our residents are happier and more independent than ever. They sit on Community Councils in order to make sure that their needs in dietary, recreation, rehabilitation and social services are met. Residents take part in cooking clubs, gardening groups and music workshops, as well as visits from entertainers, local dignitaries, and domestic and exotic animals. They facilitate and participate in intergenerational programming by sponsoring little league teams and hosting carnivals. Most importantly, they help us to identify the strengths in ourselves, so that we can better work toward becoming the community leaders that they have been all of their adult lives. In our years of managing long term care facilities, Apple has always made quality care of the resident its primary focus. However, the Better Life philosophy has only recently become the guiding hand for that focus. In the last three years, Apple has worked to lead its facilities into this new way of thinking. The steps have been small, but the cumulative effort has provided an undeniable cultural change in our homes. We are on the path to ensuring that the beds we provide are beds that we, ourselves, would want to lie in.
